6 Day Migration Safari – Ngorongoro Crater / Ndutu / Serengeti

Embark on our breathtaking wildebeest migration safari

Every year, the majestic herds of wildebeest embark on a breathtaking migration, perfectly timed with the annual rainfall and grass growth patterns. As the short rains begin in November, the wildebeest make their way to the nutrient-rich short-grass plains of the Serengeti, settling in areas east and south of Seronera, around Ndutu and the northern Ngorongoro Conservation area. During this time, you’ll witness vast herds of wildebeest and zebra grazing on these lush plains. February is extraordinary as it marks the calving season, with thousands of wildebeest calves dotting the landscape. The herds typically remain in the area until April before they start their journey westward towards the Western Corridor of the Serengeti National Park.

Join us for our 6-day Migration Wildlife Safari has been meticulously crafted to maximise your chances of witnessing this awe-inspiring event. The itinerary includes the Lake Ndutu area, southern Serengeti, and central Serengeti National Park, where the migration is most prominent from December to April. To enhance your experience and minimize travel time, you’ll fly from Serengeti National Park to Arusha on the final day. Additionally, this adventure includes a visit to the world-renowned Ngorongoro Crater.

The following itinerary is a suggested plan designed to be flexible and adapt to your preferences, seasonal changes, and the dynamic movements of the migratory herds. Day 1 – Arusha to Ngorongoro

  • Travel Time:

    3 hours 30 mins
  • Distance:

    175 km

Your adventure begins with a pick-up from your accommodation in Arusha, heading straight to the breathtaking Ngorongoro Conservation Area. We’ll arrive just in time for a delightful lunch. After enjoying your meal, we descend over 600 meters into the stunning Ngorongoro Crater for an exciting afternoon half day safari.

This incredible national park, sustained by a year-round water supply and lush fodder, hosts a vast array of wildlife. You’ll encounter herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo, and majestic African elephants. The park is also famous for its dense population of predators, including lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and the elusive leopard, which often requires a keen eye to spot.

One of the highlights of our tour is a visit to Lake Magadi, a large but shallow alkaline lake situated in the southwestern corner of the crater. Here, you can observe a multitude of flamingos, hippos, and other water birds, making it a picturesque spot for wildlife viewing.

As the day draws to a close, we’ll return to your accommodation for a delicious dinner and a comfortable overnight stay. Enjoy a restful evening, ready for more adventures in the heart of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Day 2 – Ngorongoro to Ndutu

  • Travel Time:

    3 hours 30 mins
  • Distance:

    175 km

After a delicious breakfast, we will set off for the Lake Ndutu area, located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and part of the southern Serengeti ecosystem. Despite being an alkaline lake, Lake Ndutu’s waters are drinkable and attract diverse local wildlife.

We will arrive just in time for lunch. Following lunch, we’ll embark on an exciting afternoon game drive around Ndutu. From December to April, the short-grass plains of this region typically teem with the majority of the wildebeest migration. In addition to the migrating herds, the area is rich in wildlife, including elephants, various bird species, and resident game.

As the sun sets, we’ll journey to your Ndutu accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay to rest and recharge. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Ndutu landscape, we’ll be ready for another day of game drive adventure tomorrow.

Day 3: Exploring Ndutu

  • Travel Time:

    None
  • Distance:

    0 km

Start your day with a hearty breakfast before embarking on a full-day game drive in the Ndutu area. This region offers a variety of habitats to explore, including swamps, woodlands, soda lakes, and the renowned Serengeti short-grass plains. These diverse landscapes provide a rich backdrop for viewing the abundant wildlife.

You’ll witness great herds of wildebeest and zebra grazing across the plains. If you’re visiting around February, you’ll be in time to see the magical calving season, which lasts about three weeks. During this period, most wildebeest give birth, and the plains are dotted with thousands of newborn calves. The sea of grass offers little cover, making the young vulnerable to predators. Still, it’s also a testament to nature’s resilience, as wildebeest calves can run within minutes of being born and keep up with the herd within three days.

As the day draws to a close, savour a delightful dinner and spend the night at your Ndutu accommodation, reflecting on the incredible sights and experiences of the day.

Day 4  – Ndutu – Serengeti Plains

  • Travel Time:

    About 3 to 3 hours 30 mins
  • Distance:

    91 km

After breakfast, we journey towards the central Serengeti National Park, the Seronera. As we descend into the heart of wild Africa, you’ll be greeted by the iconic endless plains of the Serengeti, stretching as far as the eye can see. Our destination is the Seronera area, renowned for its rich wildlife habitats. The Seronera River, a crucial water source, attracts diverse wildlife, providing a quintessential Serengeti experience.

We will arrive in time for a delicious lunch, setting the stage for an exciting afternoon game drive through the Serengeti. This drive will offer a chance to see various animals that make the Serengeti their home.

As the day comes to an end, enjoy a delightful dinner and settle in for the night at your accommodation in the Seronera area. Rest well, ready for more adventures in this spectacular landscape.

As you drift over rivers and small villages, you’ll witness the Serengeti come to life in a way few ever get to see.

After this magical journey and a hearty breakfast, you’ll embark on a full-day game drive in the Serengeti National Park. The Seronera area, where we are based, is a prime location to witness the awe-inspiring wildebeest migration. From late November to mid-December, vast herds migrate from Kenya’s Masai Mara to the Ndutu area in the south, passing through the Seronera. They return through this area in April as they move westward to the Western Corridor of the Serengeti.

The Seronera region is central to the migration route and a fantastic starting point to explore the eastern and southern short-grass plains of the Serengeti. You’ll see a diverse array of wildlife, making every moment an adventure.

Enjoy a delicious dinner and relax overnight in the Seronera area as the day winds down. Rest well, reflecting on the incredible sights and experiences of the day.
